The Communications Law Centre (CLC) recognises the importance of your privacy and understands your concerns about the security of your personal information. The CLC is committed to protecting all of the personal information about you that we hold.

The National Privacy Principles
- The CLC adheres to the national privacy principles set out in Privacy Act 1988 (Commonwealth)
Collection of Private Information
- The CLC only collect personal information that is necessary for the performance of its functions.
- The kinds of personal information collected and held varies according to the services you request from the CLC and may include:
- Information you give us when you instruct us to act for you or request another service from us (such as when you request information or order a publication). This information will include your name, address and contact details
- Information about individuals the CLC collects in the course of performing its functions
- Communications, including but not limited to e-mails, letters, and the like, between the CLC and you
- The CLC does not use “cookies” or “web bugs” or otherwise collect personal information about people who access the Website.
- The CLC’s internet server may automatically record details about any computer used to access the Website (such as the IP address, domain name and browser type), the date and time of access, and details of the information downloaded. This information is used for internal statistical purposes and to improve this website.
- Information that you supply through the Website (for example if you send us an email) is treated in the same manner as other information provided to the CLC.
Using and disclosing your personal information
- Any personal information that the CLC collects about you will be used and disclosed to provide you with the services that you have requested or to enable us to carry out our functions.
- Personal information may also be used to provide you with information about other services offered by us. If you would prefer not to receive this information, please let us know and we will respect your request.
Contracting out services and disclosures.
- We may disclose your personal information to our service entities and contract out some of our functions (such as mailing) to external service providers. We may disclose your personal information to these external service providers but only so that they can provide the services that we have contracted out to them.
Emails you receive from us regarding publications, events and education
- If you provide us or have provided us with your email address, we may send emails to you containing CLC publications, such as newsletters or seminar invitations.
- We may use an "email management system" to automate the management and dispatch of these emails. The system operates by inserting tracking codes in the emails that we send to you.
- The tracking code allows us to collect information such as whether you received and opened an email, and whether you clicked through to any links to our website. This information may be stored by our email management system.
- The information gathered by the email management system is used by us to:
- ensure that you only receive correspondence that you have informed us that you wish to receive
- determine whether the information that we send to your is suitable for you interests, information needs and profile
- ensure that the email address that you have provided us is still operational
- determine whether emails that we send to you are received by you
- update a request that you make to us to unsubscribe from a publication that we send to you
- review the effectiveness and relevance of our emails to you by collecting other statistical information
Access to your personal information
- In most cases, you can gain access to personal information that we hold about you.
- Requests for access to your personal information should be directed to the Privacy Officer, Communications Law Centre, PO Box 14428, Melbourne VIC 3000.
- The CLC will respond to requests for access to personal information as quickly as practicable given the volume and currency of the information requested.
- Consistent with the national privacy principles, we may refuse to give you access to personal information doing providing access would:
- be unlawful
- have an unreasonable impact on the privacy rights of others
- prejudice negotiations we are having with you
- prejudice an investigation of unlawful activity
- prejudice activities carried out by, or for, a law enforcement agency
- If we refuse to give you access, we will provide you with reasons for our refusal.
Requests for changes in personal information
- In most cases, upon your request, the CLC will amend personal information about you that is inaccurate, incomplete, or out of date.
- If we disagree about the accuracy, completeness or currency of an item of information, you may request that we associate the record of said item of information with a statement that you have a contrary view. The CLC will take reasonable steps to comply with any such request.
Changes to our privacy policy
- The CLC reserves its right to change its privacy policy at any time.
- Notification of any such changes shall be made by posting the updated version on the website.
